MUSIC - CLASSICISM TAKES A BACK SEAT
Reminiscing on MUSIC
Of course Music as a cultural component rates low in the priorities of human life. Food, Clothing and Shelter are the imperative primaries. Culture and entertainment come later. Yet, I venture to post a blog on Music with emphasis on Indian Music for the perusal of those in India and the millions spread all over the world. Why? Because these are days we see most people using i-pods 24 x 7.
Filmy music has through its simplicity has been influencing the people for over 60 years now. With its forceful encroachment, it has now almost relegated Classical music whether Hindustani or Carnatic disciplines to archives and as of now except for the very learned or naturally endowed, it is hindi or other vernacular film music that pose as the national music of India! It must be remembered that this was accomplished by old maestros who composed tuneful and melodious music that penetrated deep into the listeners’ hearts. The complicated and long drawn nuances of classical music were so skillfully compressed into easily digestible doses that appealed to the common man.It cannot be derided in anyway for if it is the people’s choice and it has to be respected. All other loftier schools of music can join the “dying-art “category and there are eminent scholars and institutions to resuscitate and keep them breathing for the benefit of posterity.
If this sounds exaggerated, it is intended.In its forceful incursion into the masses’ minds in the last 5 decades, even the filmy music is somewhat loosing its pull owing to so much compromise in standards which again is due to sort of mechanical large scale production by the present day music makers who lack the originality or sense of purpose that the earlier maestros were endowed with.
I mean to post blogs on this subject and reasonably expect any sign of encouragement and reaction from music lovers everywhere who are interested in Indian music.
